[BREAKING] 176 Confirmed Cases from Gwanghwamun Demonstration Spread to 13 Cities and Provinces Across the Country’ Ⅰ 2020.08.24Ⅰ CHOSUNILBO Ⅰ Jung Seoku
On August 15, 2020, a large crowd gathered to raise the flag to protest against the current administration. The display of the flags in the Gwanghwamun Square asks, ‘what does Taegeukgi signify in our society today?’ and ‘how does this make you feel?’ in comparison to the ‘Taegeukgi’ raised on the Liberation Day in 1945.
The artist invites the audience to observe different emotional experiences created through the comparison of these two symbolic moments.
The contrasting reactions of the individuals illustrate the extreme divide in Korean society brewed for 76 years following the cold war. The flag as a signifier is an effective indicator of the gap between time and people in a (post)conflict society: This is the paradox of the flag.

2020년 8월 15일 광화문 광장에서는 현 정권에 반대하는 대규모 시민들이 모여 태극기를 들었다. 태극기가 가득 찬 광장의 장면을 통해 현재 한국 사회에서 태극기가 갖는 기의가 무엇인지, 기의에 담긴 당신의 감정은 무엇인지 질문한다. 비교하여 1945년 8월 15일 “대한 독립 만세”를 외치며 들어올려진 태극기의 기의와 당신의 감정을 질문한다.
이 작품은 개인이 체감하는 기의의 간극, 그것으로 형성되는 타자와의 간극을 질문하기 위해 상징적인 두 장면 속 태극기를 비교한다. 태극기를 바라보는 각 개인의 직관적 반응은 한국 사회가 76년간 만들어온 양극단의 거리차를 설명한다. 시간 사이의 간극과 사람 사이의 간극을 재는 지표. 이것은 갈등사회 속 국기의 새로운 역할이 된다.
